Veterans raised their hands to serve and defend America.
They deserve to be supported in their transition back into civilian life.
The men and women who embrace military service set aside years of their lives to defend America, its values, and its allies. Upon their return to civilian life, some service members transition easily. However, this is not the case for all veterans, many of whom bring home with them physical or mental injuries that require support.
One thing is certain: Whatever their circumstances, our military veterans deserve to be treated with respect by the nation for which they have sacrificed. In short, those who served deserve to be served.
How can we best serve veterans in need of support?
This is a question we asked while interviewing veterans and their advocates across the country. We heard many answers, but one kept rising to the top: Veterans need individualized support to navigate the maze of public and private programs available to them.
It would have been super helpful for me to have a person to sit down with and talk to—someone to say, ‘Hey, here’s what’s available if you need this … if you’re having housing problems, relationship problems, whatever.’ Like, ‘Here are the avenues.’ That was not a thing when I went through coming home. … I had to walk that walk, and it was ugly, and it was horrible, and I’m super blessed to be here.”
Individually and collectively, we have an opportunity to do something meaningful to help America’s veterans succeed at home, at work, and in their communities.

Philip Morris International (PMI) is launching a nationwide initiative to serve and support those who have served. Veterans have long been a focus of our social impact efforts. Now, we are taking that support to the next level.
Our multipronged approach includes:
- Sponsoring impactful organizations dedicated to improving the lives of veterans and their families
- Supporting veterans-focused events and initiatives in the communities in which we operate
- Partnering with select law schools to offer legal clinics to help veterans access the benefits they have earned
- Bringing together veterans and their advocates, academics, policymakers, and others to push veterans’ issues into the center of conversations and remove the obstacles preventing veterans from living their best lives
- Prioritizing the hiring of military veterans and their spouses/partners as we expand our U.S. workforce
As an organization making a long-term investment in America, PMI recognizes what’s at stake. America is a better and stronger nation because of our veterans, and lip service is not nearly enough.
